Psychotherapy
Transgender individuals experience a sense of dissonance between the sex of their body (generally either male or female) and their gender identity (male, female, neither or both.) Gender identity exists along a spectrum from female to male, while society views gender within strictly a binary system as either female OR male. Children, youth and adults who do not conform to societal gender expectations experience difficulties gaining full respect and acceptance from others and, as a result, are likely to be confused or dismayed regarding their gender. The goal of psychotherapy with transgender individuals and their significant others is "lasting personal comfort with the gendered self in order to maximize overall psychological well-being and self-fulfillment." (World Professional Association for Transgender Health, Standards of Care.)
While the current mental health diagnostic manual labels gender concerns as a disorder, my approach to psychotherapy begins with a view of gender diversity as a natural part of human experience. Therapy starts with a nonjudgmental exploration of each client's gender. At the same time, any mental health or substance abuse issues, which may or may not be related to negative life experiences stemming from societal attitudes toward gender nonconforming people, can be addressed in the psychotherapy. We will strategize about how to resolve any difficulties related to gender issues in relationships, family, school or workplace. The importance of personal authenticity can be balanced with life situation practicalities to achieve the best possible outcomes. There is time to discuss in detail your questions about hormonal and/or surgical interventions. Many but not all transgender individuals choose to seek medical interventions to achieve more congruence between body and mind. Once psychotherapy is underway and various crieteria in the Standards of Care are met, I will provide referral letters to medical providers and governmental agencies if you request.
Gender Identity Evaluations
For clients over 21 years old who do not feel a need for psychotherapy, I can provide a 3-6 session evaluation to explore your choices about seeking medical interventions and review the requirements in the Standards of Care. Once these requirements are met, I will provide any referral letters you request to move ahead with your chosen path. The evaluation is also available to those who are currently in psychotherapy with a clinician who does not specialize in gender identity.
