Irwin Krieger, LCSW If you have concerns about submitting insurance claims for therapy: Many of my clients prefer not to use insurance for therapy because of privacy concerns. It is unclear to what extent the new HIPAA laws impede the discriminatory use of medical and mental health information by insurance companies. The information required by insurance companies to process a mental health claim include a mental health diagnosis, dates of service, and whether the sessions included significant others. In cases where the insurance plan requires authorization, additional information such as the client's symptoms, stressors, goals and treatment history must be provided. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, my services are covered by any plan that does not restrict you to a particular provider network, as well as by Medicare. In addition I am in the network for the following insurance plans: Some insurers also cover out-of-network providers, but generally with a deductible and possibly a higher co-pay. If you do not have one of the plans listed above, check with your insurer regarding my eligibility. (They may use a mental health network with a different name, to which I belong, such as Value Options.) If I am not in the network, ask about your out-of-network benefits.
