As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, my psychotherapy services are covered by any plan that does not restrict you to a particular provider network, as well as by Medicare. (Gender evaluations for adults are not covered by insurance.) In addition I am in the network for the following insurance plans:Aetna PPO Anthem Blue Cross/ Blue Shield PPO Yale employees: Yale Health Plan and Aetna CIGNA for Sikorsky employees United HealthCare for ATT/SBC employees Some insurers also cover out-of-network providers, but generally with a deductible and possibly a higher co-pay.
If you do not have one of the plans listed above, check with your insurer regarding my eligibility. (They may use a mental health network with a different name, to which I belong, such as Value Options.) If I am not in the network, ask about your out-of-network benefits. Or contact me, and I can inquire for you.
Some of my clients prefer not to use insurance for therapy because of privacy concerns. It is unclear to what extent the new HIPAA laws impede the discriminatory use of medical and mental health information by insurance companies. The information required by insurance companies to process a mental health claim includes a mental health diagnosis, dates of service, and whether the sessions included significant others. In cases where the insurance plan requires authorization, additional information such as the client's symptoms, stressors, goals and treatment history must be provided. If you would like to receive therapy without submitting insurance claims, or if you do not have insurance, my fee is $160 for the first session and $120 for each additional session. Sessions are 45- 50 minutes.
